Stephen Paulus (1949–2014)
Grammy Award-winning American composer Stephen Paulus was best known for his operas and choral music, with a style that is essentially tonal, melodic, and romantic by nature. A proud Twin Cities resident, he served as Composer-in-Residence at the Minnesota Orchestra and later the Atlanta Symphony, where conductor Robert Shaw commissioned numerous choral works. His best-known choral piece, The Road Home (2002), has become a staple of the repertory. In a career spanning more than forty years, his output grew to include over 450 works. Notable choral works also include Pilgrims' Hymn and To Be Certain of the Dawn, a Holocaust remembrance oratorio. He co-founded what is now the American Composers Forum.
