Marques L. A. Garrett (contemporary)
A Virginia native, Marques L. A. Garrett is Associate Professor of Choral Studies at the University of North Texas, holding a PhD in Choral Conducting from Florida State University, an MM from UNC Greensboro, and a BA from Hampton University. An avid composer of choral and solo-vocal music, his works have been performed by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Oakwood University Aeolians, Seraphic Fire, and the Turtle Creek Chorale, among many others, with commissions from Harvard, Westminster Choir College, and the Mendelssohn Chorus of Philadelphia. His largest work to date, Dreamland: Tulsa 1921, tells the story of the Greenwood district massacre through the voices of a tenor-bass chorus, soloists, and chamber orchestra. He also edited The Oxford Book of Choral Music by Black Composers (2023), a landmark anthology bringing long-overdue visibility to an underrepresented body of work.
