John Rutter
John Rutter (b. 1945)
Described by BBC Music Magazine as "the most successful and well-known composer of choral music in recent British history," John Rutter was born in London and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge, where he first came to notice as a composer of church music, choral pieces, and Christmas carols. From 1975–79 he served as Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 formed the Cambridge Singers, a professional chamber choir dedicated primarily to recording. His larger-scale choral works include the Gloria (1974), Requiem (1985), and Mass of the Children (2003). Beloved anthems like A Gaelic Blessing and For the Beauty of the Earth are fixtures in choir libraries worldwide. If a choir has sung only one living composer, it's probably Rutter.
