Johannes Brahms
Johannes Brahms (1833–1897)
Brahms may be best known for his symphonies and chamber music, but he was a committed choral composer throughout his career. His Ein deutsches Requiem (1868) stands as one of the towering monuments of the choral repertory — intimate, consoling, and profoundly human. Beyond the Requiem, his Alto Rhapsody, Nänie, Schicksalslied, and Gesang der Parzen reveal a composer deeply drawn to the voice in all its forms. He conducted choirs for much of his professional life and brought the same rigorous craft to his choral writing that defines everything he touched. For choirs, Brahms is not an occasional visitor — he is essential repertoire.
