Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) stands as the towering figure of Western choral music — a composer whose sacred output remains unmatched in both scale and depth. Serving as Kantor at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig for the last 27 years of his life, Bach produced an extraordinary body of choral work including over 200 cantatas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, the St. John Passion, and the Christmas Oratorio. His choral writing is a masterclass in the marriage of text and music — intricate counterpoint, soaring chorales, and deeply human expression all in service of something larger than himself. Basically set the bar for everyone who followed.
