Janika Vandervelde (b. 1955)
American composer, pianist, and music educator Janika Vandervelde is known for her music for orchestra, chorus, chamber ensembles, and the stage, with work notable for its feminist and ecological themes. Born in Wisconsin, she earned her doctorate in composition from the University of Minnesota, where her teachers included Dominick Argento, and has since composed more than 100 works. She served as composer-in-residence for the Minnesota Chorale, the Minnesota Center for Arts Education, and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and has written for Chanticleer, the Dale Warland Singers, and the Oregon Repertory Singers.
