Igor Stravinksy
Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971)
Stravinsky's relationship with choral music evolved dramatically across his long career. His early masterwork Les Noces (1923), for chorus, soloists, four pianos, and percussion, is unlike anything else — raw, ritualistic, and thrilling. His Symphony of Psalms (1930), written "to the glory of God," sets Latin texts with austere, block-like choral writing of stunning power. Later, his Requiem Canticles (1966) brought his serial period to bear on sacred text with sparing, haunting effect. Across wildly different stylistic phases — from neoclassicism to serialism — Stravinsky returned again and again to the chorus as a vehicle for his most serious and searching music.
