Franz Schubert
Franz Schubert (1797–1828)
Schubert may be best known for his more than 600 songs, but he was a prolific choral composer as well. His Mass in G major and Mass in E-flat major are cornerstones of the sacred choral repertoire — accessible yet deeply moving. His setting of Psalm 23 for women's voices remains a quiet masterpiece, and his Deutsche Messe is sung in churches around the world. Beyond sacred music, his secular part-songs for male and female voices reveal a composer who genuinely loved choral sound. He died at 31 having written more substantive music than many composers manage in full lifetimes. The choral world remains in his debt.
