Eric Whitacre

Eric Whitacre (b. 1970)

Born in Reno, Nevada, Eric Whitacre had no formal music training before age 18 — he played synthesizer in a techno-pop band with dreams of rock stardom. Then he joined a college choir, and everything changed. Called "the hottest thing in choral music" by the Philadelphia Inquirer, his works — Sleep, Lux Aurumque, Water Night, Cloudburst, and The Sacred Veil — are among the most performed choral pieces of the last two decades. A Juilliard graduate, his debut album Light & Gold topped the classical charts in the US and UK and won the Grammy Award for Best Choral Recording in 2012. His groundbreaking Virtual Choir projects have united over 100,000 singers from more than 145 countries. Love him or find him ubiquitous — probably both — Whitacre is impossible to ignore.
