Eleanor Alberga
Eleanor Alberga (b. 1949)
British Jamaican composer Eleanor Alberga OBE studied at the Jamaica School of Music and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London in 1970. Her music defies easy categorization, drawing on her Jamaican heritage alongside the European classical tradition. Her choral work Arise, Athena! opened the Last Night of the BBC Proms in 2015, performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Chorus under Marin Alsop, heard by millions worldwide — a landmark moment for a composer who had spent years building an extraordinary body of work for orchestra, chamber ensemble, opera, and choir. Her structural clarity and bold orchestration have earned international recognition.
