David Evan Thomas

David Evan Thomas (b. 1958)

The music of David Evan Thomas is praised for its eloquence, lyricism, and craft — rooted in tradition yet expressed in a refreshing contemporary voice. He has received two McKnight Foundation Artist Fellowships, a Citation from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Möller-A.G.O. Award in Choral Composition. Commissions include works for the Minnesota Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, American Composers Forum, and American Guild of Organists.


His catalogue spans orchestral works, chamber music, opera, oratorio, and over seventy choral pieces. Recent highlights include the recording Transformations (Centaur, 2023) and the Renée B. Fisher Composer Award. Thomas was the Schubert Club's first composer-in-residence and received its An die Musik Award in 2016.


Born in Rochester, NY in 1958, he holds a PhD from the University of Minnesota and lives in Minneapolis.
