Clara Schumann
Clara Schumann (1819 – 1896)
Though best known as a pianist, Clara Schumann composed choral works of remarkable craft and character. Her primary contribution to the choral repertoire is Drei gemischte Chöre, Op. 19 (1848), three SATB a cappella settings of poems by Emanuel Geibel. "Abendfeier in Venedig" creates a peaceful atmosphere through harmonic color and imitative entries, "Vorwärts" drives forward with powerful marching rhythms, and "Gondoliera" sways gracefully in 9/8 time. The three pieces were composed as a birthday gift for Robert Schumann. Long overlooked, these choruses are now recognized as gems of the Romantic choral repertoire, published by Breitkopf & Härtel.
