Caroline Shaw

Caroline Shaw (b. 1982)

American composer, singer, and violinist Caroline Shaw became the youngest musician ever to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music at age 30, in 2013, for her a cappella piece Partita for 8 Voices. The Pulitzer jury called it "a highly polished and inventive a cappella work uniquely embracing speech, whispers, sighs, murmurs, wordless melodies and novel vocal effects." A founding member of the vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, Shaw has gone on to compose prolifically for chorus, orchestra, chamber ensembles, and film. Her choral works — including And the Swallow, To the Hands, and Valencia — are performed worldwide. She is arguably the most talked-about composer working in choral music today.
