Carlos Simon
Carlos Simon (b. 1986)
GRAMMY-nominated composer Carlos Simon grew up in Atlanta steeped in gospel music and a long lineage of preachers — an influence that permeates his choral writing. His Requiem for the Enslaved, a multi-genre tribute commemorating 272 enslaved people sold by Georgetown University in 1838, weaves African American spirituals with Catholic liturgical melodies and earned a 2023 GRAMMY nomination for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. The world premiere of brea(d)th, commissioned by the Minnesota Orchestra and Minnesota Chorale and described by the New York Times as "arguably the most important commission of Simon's career," responds to George Floyd's murder and America's history of systemic oppression. His Gospel Mass, premiering with Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic, reimagines the traditional mass with gospel soloists and choir.
