Antonio Vivaldi
Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741)
Vivaldi is synonymous with the Baroque concerto, but his sacred choral output is equally extraordinary and somewhat undersung. As a priest and music director at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice — an orphanage for girls with an internationally renowned musical program — he composed prolifically for voices. His Gloria in D (RV 589) is among the most performed Baroque choral works in the world today. His Magnificat, Dixit Dominus, Stabat Mater, and Beatus Vir demonstrate a composer who brought the same rhythmic vitality and melodic invention to sacred choral music that he brought to his instrumental writing. The man wrote about 50 sacred works. Not bad for a violin teacher.
