Antonin Dvorak
Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904)
Dvořák's choral output is underappreciated relative to his symphonies and chamber works, but it is substantial and rewarding. His Stabat Mater — written in the shadow of personal grief — is a profound, large-scale work that deserves far more performances than it receives. His Requiem, Te Deum, and Mass in D major are similarly accomplished. The Biblical Songs, though originally for voice and piano, are widely performed in choral arrangement. And his cantata The American Flag, written during his time in New York, reflects his fascination with his adopted country. Dvořák brought the same melodic warmth and emotional directness to his choral music that defines all his work.
