Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, Op. 9 (1947), is a serene, meditative choral work for SATB choir, mezzo-soprano, and baritone, deeply rooted in Gregorian chants from the Mass for the Dead. It emphasizes peace, hope, and solace rather than terror, utilizing impressionistic harmonies, fluid rhythms, and haunting melodies to evoke a timeless, spiritual atmosphere.
